Apply for a visa for France
- According to the membership of Malta to the European Union on 01/05/2004, the Maltese nationals are not subjected to the visa to enter in France, whatever is the duration of their stay, on presentation of their Maltese ID card or on presentation of their Maltese passport (valid and in good condition).
- Further to the signature of the Schengen agreement on 01/01/2008 by the Maltese State, the non-European foreigners are generally supposed to enter on the territory with their foreign passport with a Visa label, either SCHENGEN, or VTL*
According to the current Maltese Law (directive No. 2004/38/EC/Legal Notice 191/2007), any foreigner, European or not, is considered by the Maltese Authorities "of passage as tourist or visitor" till 3 months of presence. As a consequence, from the 4th month of stay in the country, any foreigner, either goes back to his country of origin, or will have to deposit a file of application for permit of stay on Malta " Residence in Malta Application " with "Department of Citizenship". This permit, in the form of an electronic card remains compulsory for all the foreigners, including Europeans : the card delivered under the section " Residence documentation " for any European, justifies in fact his place of residence on Malta.
* In this case, after a stay of 3 months on Malta, the non-European foreigners have to apply with "Department of Citizenship" a "Permess Ta’ Residenza ", in the form of an electronic card, which is usually the equivalent of a Visa SCHENGEN of short stay (multiple entrances with 30 days maximum by quarter, what dispenses them normally and aside from certain exception, to apply for a Visa of short stay with first entrance France).
Visa applications submitted in Malta are examined by the French Embassy in Valletta. Only the French Embassy is authorised to take decisions about visas.
- For short-stay visa applications, please submit your application at least 15 days before your planned departure date;
- For long-stay visa applications, please allow around 4 month between submitting your application and your planned departure.
All persons regularly residing in Malta must make an appointment at the French Embassy in Valletta to apply for a visa.
What are the application fees?
You will be asked visas fees. They must be paid in cash and in euros.
No cheque or visa card will be accepted. You will be given a receipt that you must keep carefully. You will be asked to produce it when you collect your passport i.e. after it has been processed by the consular services. No refund will be made even in case of refusal of visa.
Book an appointment
When you have the necessary time and all the documents required for your application, you can make an appointment by email to the French Emabssy.
The Visa service strives to process applications within 48 hours but additional checks, a growing number of requests or technical problems may extend these deadlines.
We recommend that you make an appointment sufficiently in advance of your planned departure date to avoid disappointment.
The filing of an application is possible from 6 months before the departure date.
Similarly, it is found a flood of applications at the approach of summer and winter, periods of school holidays. Obtaining an appointment can then exceed a reasonable time, whereas during other periods it is limited to a few days. Accordingly, applicants are encouraged to make arrangements to file their claims with sufficient advance to avoid having to delay their departure.
