Apply for a visa for France in Ethiopia

Visa applications submitted in Ethiopia are examined by the French Embassy in Addis Abeba; only the Embassy is authorised to take decisions about visas.

All persons residing in Ethiopia must make an appointment to apply for a visa at the French Embassy.

Whom should I contact?

Visa applicants residing in Ethiopia must submit their visa files at the Embassy of France in Addis Abeba.

Once you have compiled your visa application, you can submit it at the window corresponding to your situation.

Starting Monday, June 24, 2024 a new contact center will manage visa appointments for the French Embassy in Addis Abeba : VFS Global.

  • Appointment Booking : You can schedule an appointment to submit your visa application at the Embassy through the VFS Global website: https://visa.vfsglobal.com/eth/fr/fra/.
  • Contact Center : For any questions related to visa applications for France, you can reach us by email at info.Fraeth@vfsglobal.com or by phone from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at (+251) 800 861 944.
  • Passport Collection : You can collect your passport from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Lunch break from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.) at the VFS Global center for France: 1st floor, Haimi Apartment Hotel Bole Sub City, 03 Woreda, Home number 74, Addis Abeba, Ethiopia.

What are the visa fees ?

Fees are seen in Ethiopian Birr (ETB) by the French administration for the processing of your application. The rates are indicated in euros (€), to get the price in local currency (ETB), please convert the amount indicated in the table by applying the Rate of Chancellery.

The amount received is kept by the administration, even in the case of refusal of Visa.

Collecting passports

You can collect your passport from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Lunch break from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.) at the VFS Global center for France.

When you visit a French Consulate, you must not bring any weapons or dangerous items with you. Security checks will be performed before you are admitted to the premises.

Information about the appointment

Personal appearance : Visa applicants must submit their visa application in person to the French Embassy.

Remember to bring the following :

  • Your passport ;
  • The appointment confirmation letter (printed out);
  • The file containing all the required documents presented in the same order as on the list of required documents;
  • Payment to cover the cost of the visa and the visa processing fees.

Biométrics

In the biometrics booth, your photograph and fingerprints will be taken.

Children under 12 years of age: children under 12 years of age are not required to provide the biometric data; the application must be submitted by the child’s parent/legal guardian. The photograph in the ISO/IEC format (pdf) of the child will be scanned.

After visiting the biometric booth, you can leave the visa application centre.

Collecting your passport

You can collect your passport yourself at the French Embassy.

Official passports

Visas issued to holders of official passports (i.e. related to their functions) are free of charge.

Documents to be provided :

  • A short-stay visa application form for the Schengen area
  • Passport (valid at least for 3 months after the expiry date of the requested visa), which must include 2 blank pages of any stamp accompanied by a photocopy of the identity page and the previous Schengen visas
  • Two identity photos
  • A note verbal containing :
    • main objective/purpose of the journey,
    • name and surname,
    • title or function,
    • destination,
    • dates of stay
  • A mission order
  • A letter of invitation from the organization to which the visa applicant applies
  • For service passports only: a medical insurance subscribed for travel within the Schengen Area valid for the entire duration of attendance on the Schengen territory
  • Reservation of the return air ticket.

Family reunification (refugee’s family in France)

  • Long-stay visa application form duly completed and signed.
  • Passport (valid for a minimum of 3 months after the date of expiry of the visa requested) must include 2 blank pages of all stamps accompanied by a photocopy of the identity page and previous Schengen visas.
  • Two recent photos with standards on a light background.
  • Proof of the protection granted by OFPRA to the "sponsor", including a copy of the decision of the Office or a copy of the residence card bearing the mention of refugee status.
  • Full copy of the birth and / or marriage certificate establishing the family link with the protected person, or failing that, any document that may establish this link.
  • For minor children: authorization from both parents to allow the minor child to travel.
